Inclusivity Is at Our Core

True inclusive thought begins at the first step of a process and allows framework to be built around it. While we believe all intentions that move toward inclusivity and welcoming are positive, we also see how much outcomes are improved when we start with the concept of inclusivity right from the beginning, rather than tacking it on as a secondary thing. Our programs consider inclusivity from the start, and not merely adapting existing options. Instead, we look at creating spaces where individuals can give their best and achieve their full potential. Our mission is to provide opportunities where people can participate and contribute meaningfully.

Employment

While some programs might take an assessment of a client’s limitations first, we first take stock of what a client can offer in the workplace: experience, skills, abilities, interests, personality and goals all factor into how we look at supporting someone in their employment journey. This is not so different from how we all look for work, but at Trellis, we have the added benefit of a whole team of Job Coaches and Employment Specialists who know how to find and support long-term roles for clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We have a network of employers who appreciate having a diverse staff on hand, and we go above and beyond to show new employer connections the benefits of hiring our valuable clients too.

Community

Our Community Events are designed to provide valuable social and learning experiences for our clients. We spend a lot of time selecting and developing great activities that everyone can enjoy and participate in. We know many of our clients can easily feel isolated from parts of the community and local culture, which further limits their opportunities to have meaningful relationships and life experiences on their own. We aim to create spaces where all clients, regardless of who they are, will feel comfortable enough to try new things like cooking, dancing, playing games, exploring the outdoors or visiting new places.

Creating inclusive programs and spaces is an ongoing effort, and one that we know involves planning and consideration from the start as well as throughout our day-to-day work, making changes and trying to improve as we go. True participation in both the job sphere and the social sphere requires making them both accessible and ensuring they are environments that allow for individual agency.
